IIT-KGP has asked its students and researchers to vacate the hostel premises by June 20 and return to their homes. Registrar BN Singh told Press Trust of India on Sunday that the institute wants students to return to campus when the new semester begins in September. “Out of a total of 12,500 hostel border guards, 5,400 were there when the lockdown began in late March. Another 3,000 were taken home last month and about 2,400 are currently staying on campus,” Singh said.

“Instead of staying on campus without taking classes in the classroom, they can spend quality time with family and start classes again from September,” Singh explained. “Since the academic year 2019-20 is closed and all academic activities will end by June 15 and normal academic activities can only start from September, we are requesting students (UG, PG, Research Scholar) and project staff who are staying. Hostel / The institute will close all hostel / hall mess facilities effective from June 20, “according to a notice issued by the registrar.

For researchers, Mr. Singh says they can do their research work from home and call because faculty are responsive to their needs.
